The Maulers had a rough night on Friday, when the Southern Oregon Spartans ended the Maulers ten game win streak. Fighting for the second place spot in the Northwest Division of the WSHL. The Maulers and the Spartans are now divided by six points in the standings after Missoula came off with two W's on Saturday and Sunday.
While Friday started off great for the home boys, when Sam Sevcik, a Slovakian forward, grabbed a quick goal for Zoo, his 10th of the season, midway through the first period. Captain Sawyer Jacobson and A Captain, Corey Schafer both got points off off Sevciks goal. This would turn out to be the only lead the Maulers would hold all night but the excitement was short lived since Johan Lovestrom netted a goal just before the period ended to even up the teams going into the second period.
Doug Gutierrez grabbed the lead for the Spartans in the second period. Despite two Missoula power plays and one for Southern Oregon, none of the teams were able to capitalize. That was the only goal scored in the period and the game winner.
6:56 seconds into the third, Captain, Mackenzie Wood strengthed the lead putting another past Aron Holmgren. Drew Carriere put away the game with a power play goal. Missoula gathered 11 minutes in penalties in the third period alone. It was a disappointing night for the Maulers and their fans but anyone who knows this team also knows how they play when they're angry and the series had only just begun!
